Artist: Marie Long Media: Assemblage   Marie
Long has traveled the world extensively and is deeply rooted in
the desert. She has lived in the Arabian, Mojave and Sonoran
Desert, currently residing in Tucson, Arizona. She received a
B.A. with a minor in Papermaking from the University of South
Carolina in 1993, graduated from North Carolina State University
with an Applied Science Degree in Horticulture as well. She also
studied under Noah Purifoy in Joshua Tree, California.Marie has taught papermaking workshops in California. Her work has been exhibited in numerous juried shows including the Scrap Gallery, Palm Springs Art Museum, 29 Palms Art Gallery and McKissick Museum. Artist Statement Marie Long  The materials I work with are organic and recycled materials discarded in the desert. Often my work resembles ancient images from past cultures. There is an aspect about collecting and arranging materials that is like meditation. The process of gathering material, creating sheets of paper and the design process are just as important to me as the completed piece. I weave together a combination of natural elements and man-made materials into an assemblage. Creating assemblage is an expression of self and emotion. The role of color, texture and layers are an important component in my work. I hope viewers are drawn into my work and will identify with the materials, colors and textures of each piece.
